A laptop that won't charge has a handful of likely causes, from a frayed cable to a board-level charging fault. Work through these before assuming the worst.

Check the charger and cable

Inspect the adapter for damage and the cable for kinks or fraying near the connector. Try a known-good charger of the correct wattage. A laptop may power on but not charge if the adapter is underpowered.

Check the charging port

A loose or wobbly port, or one that only charges at a certain angle, often means a worn or cracked DC jack (or USB-C port). This is a common repair — see our laptop repair service.

Battery health

Batteries degrade after a few years. Windows (battery report) and macOS (System Information) show cycle count and health. A swollen battery is a safety issue — stop using it and book a replacement immediately.

Board-level charging faults

If the charger, cable, port, and battery all check out but it still won't charge, the fault may be in the charging circuit on the motherboard. Our board-level repair can diagnose and fix charging ICs and blown components.
